The Brief – To convert a former disused office building into flats. We helped to deliver 28 new high-quality flats within an existing building in of Barnstaple town centre in Devon. The project did not require planning permission as it took advantage of the permitted development rights which encourage the re-development of empty buildings in town centres in England. We had to overcome challenges to ensure the project complied with building regulations. Our knowledge and understanding of these documents and our experience working with existing buildings meant we could shape the design to ensure compliance. On the top floor we took a dated mansard roof feature and transformed it into a modern roof terrace giving these flats unique views across the town and to the wider coastline and uplifting the appearance of the property. This project demonstrates that high quality housing does not have to be new build and a sustainable approach to development can be through utilising existing empty buildings.
