From dark and dated to bright and contemporary!
Our clients approached us with the ambition to completely reimagine their existing bungalow into a home that truly supports modern family life. The original layout was cramped, lacking natural light and functional space. They needed more room, better flow, and a design that reflected how they actually live.
We began by rethinking the entrance, removing the dark, enclosed lobby and introducing rooflights to bring natural daylight into the heart of the home. The internal layout was reconfigured to create a clear distinction between public and private spaces — open-plan living, kitchen, and dining areas on one side, and bedrooms and utility tucked away for privacy and quiet.
To meet their need for additional space, we proposed adding a first floor. While this presented challenges in a neighbourhood of mainly single-storey homes, we carried out detailed planning research and solar impact studies to ensure the design was both justified and sensitive to its surroundings.
The final proposal not only fulfilled the client’s brief but introduced thoughtful design elements they hadn’t initially considered. The result is a spacious, light-filled, and contemporary family home that feels right at home in its context.
